UANL wine warehouse to be unveiled at Vintage 2023

Thanks to this winemaking project, the University aims to promote the culture of wine production and related research

A wine warehouse to support grape growers and winemakers in the state is the facility to be opened during UANL’s Vintage 2023.

This project, which started last year, also aims to promote the culture of wine production, develop human resources who specialize in this type of crops, train winemakers and people related to this field of tourism, and conduct research related to the subject.

Since 2011, we have had an experimental vineyard at the University, but our grapes were sent to Parras, Coahuila, to be processed, and that is when the idea of building an on-site winery was born. Through this project, not only the University’s grapes but also those of other producers in the state, will be followed up.

The winery will be equipped with elevators, a de-stemmer, three 2,000-liter and one 4,000-liter fermentation tanks, 11 oak barrels, a filtering process, and a bottle-filling machine.

Supported by the Government of Nuevo Leon through the Ministry of Economy, the project strives to make Nuevo Leon known for its production of high-quality wines.

Multiple layers

A winery will allow Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon to produce its own wine named Alere, and the plan is to expand this initiative into more lines of research and even into a degree program related to the subject.

“The second phase of the project is to open a restaurant and an enology institute as part of the winery, and to offer a degree program in this area. The idea is that more Mexicans can specialize in enology since most of the experts are from countries such as Argentina, Chile, and Spain”.

UANL Vintage 2023 will be held on June 24 at the Center for Research in Agricultural Production located in Linares, Nuevo Leon, as part of the 90th anniversary of the academic institution.
