UANL Embraces Humanism from the School of Salamanca
UANL and the University of Salamanca will come together to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the School of Salamanca through the creation of a special academic chair and joint postgraduate programs.
As part of the 500th anniversary of the School of Salamanca, Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL) and the University of Salamanca (USAL) held a working meeting to coordinate their participation in the commemoration of one of the most influential intellectual movements of the Renaissance.
The meeting was led by UANL President Santos Guzmán López and USAL President Juan Manuel Corchado. During the visit, the Mexican delegation held a working session with a group of deans from Spain’s oldest university, which boasts eight centuries of history.
Following the meeting, both institutions formalized lines of collaboration, highlighting the creation of the Extraordinary Chair of the School of Salamanca at UANL. This new chair will serve as an academic and cultural platform for the promotion of political, legal, and economic thought.
“We recognize the great significance of the emergence of this community of thinkers and theologians, particularly for their profound influence on the development of international law, classical economics, and modern human rights theory. We are grateful to this iconic European university for inviting us to take part in the celebrations and for the opportunity to further strengthen UANL’s international presence.”

Rooted in a period of far-reaching changes—including humanism, the Protestant Reformation, and geographical discoveries—the intellectual legacy of the School of Salamanca has been internationally recognized for laying the foundations of modern concepts that endure to this day.
His ideas on international law and human rights have directly influenced the evolution of legal and political thought worldwide since 1526, originating at the University of Salamanca, one of Europe’s oldest institutions of higher education.
“This alliance strengthens the historic relationship between the two universities and reaffirms their shared commitment to academic excellence, international cooperation, and the advancement of the Ibero-American knowledge community,” states USAL on its official website.
