UANL is World Class Leader in Information Technology

The Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon guarantees the governance of Information Technology by obtaining the international certification that assures the quality in services, infrastructure, operation, communication and management of the Department of Information Technology (DGI, Spanish abbreviation).
So UANL is now a leader institution, in Latin America, in the good government of information technology. This position was given by the International Computer Room Expert Association (ICREA), the Enterprise Normalizacion y Certificacion Electronica (NYCE) and the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Institute.
On June 30th, UANL President, Jesus Ancer Rodriguez and the Department of Information Technology Director, Alberto Zambrano Elizondo, received four international awards: three institutional certifications and one more that includes three awards for the DGI personnel.
The plaques were delivered by ICREA President, Eduardo Rocha Alvarez; NYCE Northeast Manager Ricardo Villalobos Gutierrez; IT Institute Manager, Angelica Vela Loredo, and Jose Alfredo Calvo Lopez, ITERA Representative.
Alberto Zambrano Elizondo said that the international best practices and standards of information technology have been included in the Institution’s basic procedures as a quotidian exercise since 2009.
“For a University like ours, with the Vision 2020 of being a world class institution, it takes world class IT services too to support our institution in teaching, research, management and extension in order to assure online services of higher quality 24/7,” said UANL Department of Information Technology Director.
World Class University
Doctor Antonio Fernandez Martinez, Group of Indicators of Conference of Presidents of Spanish Universities (CRUE) Coordinator in Universidad de Almeria, Spain, said that with these certifications, UANL places as an institution with indicators higher than the average in Latin America.
“From now on this University turns into a leader in Latin America because it is the first one that receives this group of standards, and there is no university in Spain that accumulates these certificates, so UANL is an example for Spanish universities,” said European expert.
DGI wants to give online services of world class quality to university community, and for this reason, this institution has been subjected to international certifications in information technology for the last five years. It was a hard work performed by 171 university employees and 51 people of social work and internships.
ICREA is working in 23 countries. It is an association specialized in design, creation, operation, maintenance, acquisition, installation and audit of data centers. This association gave UANL the Level 1 QADC (Quality Assurance Data Center) Certificate for third consecutive year.
“Talking about Data Center I can say that achieving a certification of ICREA is a privilege that a few institutions get. The Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon is the first institution, in the world, that obtained it,” said engineer Eduardo Rocha Alvarez.
Enterprise Normalizacion y Certificacion Electronica (NYCE) gave the ISO/IEC 20000 Standard to the Leading Academic Institution after the DGI was certified in ITIL Foundation (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) in Intermediate and Expert levels.
Engineer, Ricardo Villalobos Gutierrez said that it was essential in this information age that institutions like UANL care about its services fulfill high quality standards.
“Actually, they have a bigger commitment by requesting NYCE, as certification organization of management systems for information technology services, to watch what they have given and what they will be giving by following up processes and functions –which require discipline, organization, planning and management– that help to fulfill this commitment,” he said.
The Capability Maturity Model Integration of the CMMI Institute evaluates the most important software process and applies a series of rules and best practice for the implementation of continuous improvement process in the development, maintenance and operation of software systems; it is the de facto standard for all companies that develop or support software implementation.
UANL received the CMMI Maturity Level 3 Certificate and became the first public university of Latin America with this certification, mentioned Jose Alfredo Calvo Lopez, ITERA representative.
“We hope that with this certification, information technology users start getting better results each time; from now, there is a responsibility with the IT community to demonstrate that the certification gives the expected benefits and that our user areas are getting and enjoying the quality of services”, said Calvo Lopez.
Personnel from the Department of Information Technology were trained by the IT Institute in three areas: Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL), Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology (COBIT) and Project Management (PMI).
“UANL is undeniably one of the most tenacious organizations and it has a clear vision of its objectives in training, since their members have multiple official certifications guided by a well-defined strategy”, mentioned Angelica Vela Loredo, IT Institute Manager.
President Jesus Ancer Rodriguez shared that UANL seeks to position itself in an international level, and these indicators are basic for international rankings, besides that, the quality of information technology services for thousands of users is guaranteed.
“These certifications are special because they are international certifications, including a global one; it took 5 years of work to the Department of Information Technology; we have an alliance with the Universidad de las Americas to bring IT support and the procedures implemented in these areas are developed by UANL experts obviously”, said the President.
He mentioned that in information technology the capacity of supporting virtual education will be increased, “we need enough bandwidth, since technology is part of youth, we must integrate the campuses; the management of resources for this investment –which is a priority– is being analyzed.”
