1. What is the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL)?
   
   The Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon known by its acronym (UANL) is the third largest Mexican University and the most important public one with the largest academic offer in the northeast part of the country. It was ranked by the Reader's Digest-AC Nielsen Survey in 2005 as the top university (both public and private) in the northeast region of Mexico.

    

2. Where in Mexico is the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon?

The UANL main campus is located in San Nicolas de los Garza, México, a county within the Monterrey Metro Area is a city of great cultural and business activity with a variable climate and many possibilities for ecotourism and adventure sports. Its dynamism reflects the changes of the 21st Century. It has a complete local transportation system and great shopping centers. It is considered one of the most important commercial and technological centers of Latin America. The UANL is 15 minutes away from Monterrey Downtown by Metro.

3. What is the UANL’s ranking in Mexico?

UANL ranks among the best Universities in Mexico, for the quality of its programs, and in commercial rankings made by some editorials houses, it always ranks in the 10-top institutions in Mexico. As stated above and as an example of this in the Readers-Digest Ranking of 2005, made by AC Nielsen, UANL was ranked the top University in Northeast Mexico, above any private or public institute in the region.

4. Is UANL accredited?

All the programs of UANL are accredited by CIIES (Mexican Board of Quality in Education). Up to 99% of all students of UANL attend programs ranked of highest quality by CIIES. The International Accreditations are also at the undergraduate and graduate level. Example of this is the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accreditation for our Civil Engineering program, or the SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) account accreditation of the Social Work graduate programs.

Monterrey is known as the industrial capital of Mexico, and it's most important industries include beer, cement, glass, steel, and food products. It is one of the most accessible cities in the country, with more than 194 flights making daily connections to cities throughout Mexico, the United States and Canada. The state of Nuevo Leon has a modern network of superhighways and railways. The city is overlooked by an impressive natural wonder, the majestic mountains of the Eastern Sierra Madre range and Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Mountain), which is the symbol of the city. The cultural life in the city includes museums and the traditional "Barrio Antiguo" neighborhood in the historical center. It also has many theaters, art galleries and sporting events, as well as regional and international restaurants.

7. What are the campuses and the schools of UANL in Monterrey, Mexico?

Our university has a main campus known as Ciudad Universitaria, and five additional campuses in the Monterrey-metro area and in the state of Nuevo Leon. The Main campus is located in San Nicolas de los Garza (San Nicolas for short) and houses the Office of the University President and the administrative system in the Administration Tower (Rectoría). In addition, it houses 13 colleges, a stadium, two main libraries, the central COOP and bookstore, many computer centers and cafeterias. Also it contains a number of research institutes, auditoriums and gymnasiums and sports facilities in a great extension surrounded by beautiful grounds.

On the Health Sciences-campus located 15 min west of the main campus, the health-related schools are located, including the colleges of: Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Psychology, Public Health and Nutrition, the UANL Personnel-clinic and our Dr. Jose Eleuterio Gonzalez University Hospital, a 500-bed teaching, research and assistance facility.

The Mederos-campus is located 20 minutes south of Ciudad Universitaria; it is comprised of the colleges of Communication Sciences, Music, Political Sciences, Stage Arts, Visual Arts, and the new school of Economy. In addition it has other facilities such as the Center for Physical Preparation of teachers and students, the Academic Support and Services Center and a modern and functional Seminaries Unit. The campus also houses the University Theatre and the World Trade Center.

Outside the Monterrey-metro area, the Marín-campus with the Agriculture School is located 40 minutes east of Ciudad Universitaria; there. The Linares-campus (two hours south of Ciudad Universitaria) is home to the Colleges of Forestry and Earth Sciences, plus a branch of the School of Accounting and Business Administration. Additionally, UANL has one campus in Sabinas Hidalgo with branches of the schools of Law and Business, and a new campus for the Schools of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in Escobedo County.

Dr. Jesus Ancer Rodríguez is President of the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon, Mexico (UANL). He was elected in October, 2009 and will be in office until 2012.

9. How old is UANL?

The UANL is one of the oldest universities in Mexico, beginning in 1824 as a law school and establishing both the Civil Academy and the Medicine School in 1859.  However, the Universidad de Nuevo Leon was officially founded in September 1933. The University became Autonomous in 1971. This year 2009, UANL celebrated its 76th anniversary.

With 372 National Researchers awarded by Mexico's National Council for Science and Technology, and more than 500 ongoing basic and applied research projects for 2006 / 2007, the UANL is the strongest research-university in northeastern Mexico. The number of researchers at our institution is higher than that of all public and private institutions combined in Nuevo Leon. We publish more than nine peer-reviewed journals in different fields of knowledge; and our researchers publish more than 400 papers in indexed journals annually.

1. Are the UANL libraries open to the public?

Yes, our library system has more than 80 libraries throughout the campi and around the state of Nuevo Leon. Here are the descriptions of the main libraries.

"Capilla Alfonsina" Library

Located at "Ciudad Universitaria", this library is comprised of 5 specialized collections. It also contains a part of the personal Library of the poet and writer Alfonso Reyes, the most renowned author from Monterrey. The name Capilla "Chapel" was given to his Library, because it was considered a sanctuary for culture, literature and knowledge. This Library also has special facilities for the visually impaired.

“Raul Rangel Frias” University Library

Dedicated in September 1995, it operates as a creative and dynamic provider of information that serves as a Museum, facilitating research, teaching, and learning by providing easy access to superb collections, information and services. The physical facility that welcomes research, study, and discourse provides an environment in which people and ideas are respected. Containing large spaces for art exhibitions, it also has a Conventions Center with a comfortable seating capacity for 361 places, and three multiple use halls for near 500 people.
